Director of Programs

Apply for this role

The opportunity

2026-2027 is ABLE’s year of infrastructure: the year we build the systems, standards and strategies that carry our programs into year three. This is your opportunity to join a young, growing nonprofit as the architect of that work, someone who can take a founder’s program vision and turn it into structure other people can actually use. You will prioritize, evaluate and recommend; the Founder & Executive Director sets the program vision and holds final approval on creating, discontinuing or materially changing programs.

What you’ll own

  • ABLE’s program standards and quality bar: how we design, deliver, evaluate and document our programs
  • The evaluation framework that makes each program’s value clear
  • The annual portfolio plan across all five pillars, built within the approved program priorities
  • Guidance for program volunteers, and input on the future Programs Manager role

What you’ll build

  • An honest assessment of our current programs: what is working, what needs improvement, what should be strengthened, and what may need to change
  • Practical, written program standards other people can actually use
  • An evaluation framework that makes each program’s value clear
  • A portfolio plan to guide our 2027-2028 cycle
  • A defined scope for the future Programs Manager role

You might be a great fit if

  • You are drawn to the opportunity: helping a young, growing nonprofit build what comes next.
  • You have built or run community programs and you think in systems
  • You can turn a big vision into frameworks, standards and plans
  • You are comfortable setting direction and guiding others rather than doing everything yourself
  • You believe programs should be built with community, not for it, and reflect dignity, never pity

The commitment

This is an unpaid volunteer role, about 20 hours per month, with no fixed term. Start dates are flexible. It is primarily remote, with some planned activity in the DMV, and includes our monthly leadership roundtable and quarterly leadership development sessions. Approved expenses are reimbursed under ABLE policy.

PARTNERSHIPS & COLLABORATION · VOLUNTEER · ABOUT 20 HOURS A MONTH

Director of Partnerships & Collaboration

Apply for this role

The opportunity

Great partnerships are never accidents. They are built on purpose, with clarity about what each side needs and what each side can actually deliver. This is your opportunity to help a young, growing nonprofit lead its partnership work from strategy through relationship stewardship: first understanding who ABLE is and what we need, then building the strategy, then opening doors and stewarding the relationships over time.

What you’ll own

  • The partnership strategy and pipeline: who we pursue, in what order, and at what stage
  • Significant relationship conversations with prospective and active partners, and stewardship of those relationships over time
  • Help shape proposed partnership terms and draft MOUs, and set the standards for what ABLE will and will not agree to
  • Complete, current partnership records in ABLE HQ

What you’ll build

  • A partnership strategy naming who ABLE needs, why, and in what order
  • Open doors: outreach, exploratory meetings and a real pipeline
  • Draft partnership terms and MOUs for the Founder & Executive Director’s approval
  • A records practice where nothing lives only in someone’s head
  • Significant partner relationships that last: ongoing stewardship, check-ins and renewals

You might be a great fit if

  • You are drawn to the opportunity: helping a young, growing nonprofit build what comes next.
  • You are a natural relationship builder who does homework before reaching out
  • You can give a clear, kind no when an opportunity is not a fit
  • You understand what a young grassroots nonprofit can and cannot promise
  • You can be present in the DMV for partner meetings and community events

The commitment

This is an unpaid volunteer role, about 20 hours per month, with no fixed term. Start dates are flexible. It is primarily remote, with some planned activity in the DMV, and includes our monthly leadership roundtable and quarterly leadership development sessions. Approved expenses are reimbursed under ABLE policy.

MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS · VOLUNTEER · ABOUT 20 HOURS A MONTH

Director of Marketing & Communications

Apply for this role

The opportunity

ABLE has a story worth telling well. This is your opportunity to help a young, growing nonprofit build the voice, direction and systems behind it while the foundation is still being built. You will set the direction and the quality bar, with day-to-day production supported by volunteers, interns or vendors. You will work with the Founder & Executive Director and the leadership team: Programs on participant-facing and recruitment communications, Development on donor and campaign materials, and Partnerships on joint communications.

What you’ll own

  • ABLE’s brand standards, message, channel strategy and editorial calendar
  • The direction and quality bar for communications, with production supported by volunteers, interns or vendors
  • Helping others across ABLE use the brand well
  • Documented consent for community stories and images, and early flags on reputational concerns

What you’ll build

  • Brand standards and a message framework that give ABLE one clear, consistent voice
  • A communications plan and editorial calendar grounded in our priorities, audiences and capacity
  • A simple request process so departments can get communications support with realistic lead times
  • A clear approval process and reusable guidance that help production move without making you the bottleneck
  • A data practice that connects website traffic, conversions, email and social performance to better decisions

You might be a great fit if

  • You are drawn to the opportunity: helping a young, growing nonprofit build what comes next.
  • You have strong editorial judgment and a natural feel for voice
  • You can set direction, prioritize, and support others in doing good work
  • You are curious about the numbers behind the creative work: who we reach, what resonates and what leads people to act
  • You care about portraying communities as builders and decision-makers, never with pity

The commitment

This is an unpaid volunteer role, about 20 hours per month, with no fixed term. Start dates are flexible. It is primarily remote, with some planned activity in the DMV, and includes our monthly leadership roundtable and quarterly leadership development sessions. DEVELOPMENT · VOLUNTEER · ABOUT 20 HOURS A MONTH

Fundraising Manager

Apply for this role

The opportunity

ABLE is growing, and our fundraising needs a steady pair of hands. This is your opportunity to help a young, growing nonprofit run the fundraising machinery week to week: campaigns, donor records, stewardship follow-through, and a careful review eye on our grants. Strategy sits with our Founder & Executive Director. You are the person who makes it happen.

What you’ll own

  • The fundraising calendar: campaigns, appeals and reporting dates
  • Approved campaigns, run end to end, with results reported against plan
  • Grant review, not grant writing: completed applications and reports checked for quality, accuracy and alignment before final approval
  • Submitted grants, decisions and reporting dates, tracked so nothing falls through the cracks
  • Donor stewardship follow-through, accurate donor and sponsor records, and appropriate relationship-building touchpoints after ABLE’s automated gift acknowledgment
  • The approved stewardship plan for recurring and mid-level donors

What you’ll build

  • A reliable annual fundraising calendar
  • Campaign workplans with a clear sequence, assignments and dates
  • A grant review step that nothing skips
  • A stewardship practice that follows through on every donor relationship after our automated acknowledgment

You might be a great fit if

  • You are drawn to the opportunity: helping a young, growing nonprofit build what comes next.
  • You are organized, reliable, and good with details and deadlines
  • You can juggle a calendar full of moving pieces without dropping any
  • You are comfortable executing an approved plan; you do not need to set the strategy to do great work
  • Experience with donors, grants or campaigns helps, but diligence and follow-through matter more

PEOPLE & CULTURE · VOLUNTEER · ABOUT 20 HOURS A MONTH

Recruitment & Onboarding Manager

Apply for this role

The opportunity

ABLE is building its team, and how we find our people matters as much as who we find. This role builds ABLE’s recruitment playbook: how we write job descriptions and postings, where we share them, how we recruit our fellows and interns, and how every candidate moves from interest to a decision, then gets a thoughtful welcome once they join. Some of the work is recruiting for roles that are open now; most of it is building the foundation that every future search will run on. You will work closely with our Director of People & Culture.

What you’ll own

  • ABLE’s recruitment playbook for every kind of role: volunteer leaders, fellows and interns
  • The standard for how we write job descriptions and postings
  • Recruiting for open roles, alongside each role’s hiring manager
  • Clear, timely communication with candidates, and an applicant pipeline in ABLE HQ that is always current
  • Onboarding for new teammates: the context, introductions and tools they need to get started

What you’ll build

  • A step-by-step recruiting process any hiring manager can follow
  • Job description and posting templates
  • A recruiting plan for the P.I.L.L.A.R. Cohort’s fellows and interns
  • Relationships with colleges, universities and community networks where we share opportunities
  • Interview guides, scorecards and message templates so every candidate is weighed fairly
  • An onboarding approach that gives every new teammate a clear, welcoming start

You might be a great fit if

  • You are drawn to the opportunity: helping a young, growing nonprofit build what comes next.
  • You have recruited, hired, welcomed new teammates or coordinated volunteers, or built a process others could follow
  • You think in systems and write processes down clearly
  • You follow up, keep records clean, and treat every candidate’s time and information with care
  • You believe a fair, consistent process is part of a good culture

The commitment

This is an unpaid volunteer role, about 20 hours per month, with no fixed term. Start dates are flexible. It is primarily remote, with some planned activity in the DMV, and includes our monthly leadership roundtable and quarterly leadership development sessions. Approved expenses are reimbursed under ABLE policy.
