A New Model for Leadership Development

At The ABLE Foundation, we believe that the next generation of Black leaders is not waiting for permission. They are already here, already engaged, and already making an impact. What they need is access: access to mentors, access to real-world experience, and access to a community that believes in their potential. That is exactly what the P.I.L.L.A.R. Cohort was designed to provide.

The P.I.L.L.A.R. Cohort is ABLE's flagship leadership development program, bringing together 21 Fellows, Interns, and Pillar Coordinators from five universities to work across ABLE's five program pillars: Business & Economic Advancement, Creative & Cultural Impact, Education & Development, Health & Wellness, and Justice & Equity.

How the Cohort Works

Each cohort member is assigned to a specific pillar based on their interests, academic background, and career goals. Within their pillar, they contribute to active program deliverables, gaining hands-on experience in program management, community engagement, research, event planning, and strategic communications.

This is not a passive internship. Cohort members are embedded in the work. They help plan and execute programs like the Business Accelerator Series, the Beyond the Bell film competition, and the ABLE Leadership Lab. They interface with community partners, manage timelines, and contribute to the foundation's impact reporting.

Why This Matters for the Future of Black Leadership

Too many leadership development programs operate in silos. A business program teaches business. A health program teaches health. But real leadership requires the ability to think across disciplines, to understand how economic development connects to health outcomes, how education intersects with justice, and how culture shapes community identity.

The P.I.L.L.A.R. model is holistic by design. While each member has a pillar focus, they gain exposure to the full spectrum of ABLE's work through cross-pillar collaboration, team meetings, and shared program experiences. This produces leaders who are not just skilled in one area but who understand the interconnected nature of community empowerment.

Building a Track Record

In its inaugural term, the cohort has already helped execute the ABLE Leadership Lab, which brought together over 50 students from five universities for a day of workshops, networking, and leadership training. Cohort members have contributed to grant applications, community outreach, social media campaigns, and event production.

Every cohort member undergoes a structured evaluation process tied to ABLE's KPI Framework, which measures program effectiveness, engagement, and individual growth. This data-driven approach ensures accountability and continuous improvement.
